I say this because I believe I have a
part missing and it has no name.
In the section "Science, General" I
learned that it is possible that macro
scale bodies, objects large enough
to be seen by the human eye, exist
without their ever having been seen.
Their effects might be understood and
categorized but the existence of the
physical source has not been empirically
verified. There are things out there
we haven't actually found, sliced open,
stuck flags on, written stories about, but
we know are there nonetheless. Early in
this century Percival Lowell became
obsessed with the possibility of a ninth
planet, a Planet X orbiting at the extreme
edge of the solar system. Minute shifts
in the orbital paths of Uranus and Neptune
pointed to interference caused by the
gravitational pull of a planet size object
traversing their orbits. Lowell died
dreaming of it. Fourteen years later, in
1930, something was finally photographed,
Planet X was finally seen, finally given
a name, Pluto. But it had been there all
along, wandering about the outskirts
of heaven.
