Lowell Bodies are those objects whose
existence is suspected, even accepted but
for which there is as yet no conclusive
evidence.
The existence of Lowell Bodies in the human
anatomy is well known. Think of the soul:
no single other organ has been subject to
such intense scrutiny and worry. For St.
Augustine it was the divinity within us.
When we die our corrupt mortal bodies will
fall away and our souls will rise up through
the seven spheres of heaven, clothed in
light, to touch the hem of God's robe.
Aquinas ranked the souls and heavenly
rewards awaiting them. Those who had kept
God's name in this life sat closest to God
and the saints. The others had to scramble for
a seat in the bleachers. Swedenborg claimed
souls in heaven would have complete human
bodies, that they would live in splendid
Victorian homes complete with running water,
that they would eat and drink and enjoy sex.
He did not mention the re-runs.
